County Mayo is located on the west coast of Ireland, belongs to the province of Connaught and covers an area of 5,397 kmē. Its capital and largest town of the county is Castlebar.
There are many walking & cyling routes to explore in the county and the landscape is remarkably varied with mountains and lakes. For anglers, the river Moy is one of Ireland's most prolific salmon rivers. The County Mayo is also home to the Croagh Patrick mountain, where according to a legend St. Patrick fasted for 40 days and 40 nights.
Achill, the largest island of Ireland, is in Mayo and the highest point of the county is Mweelrea with 814 metres. Close to the border with County Roscommon is the pilgrims shrine of Knock. The tourist attraction of Ceide Fields is located near the town Ballycastle in the north of Mayo and reveal a stone-age landscape with dwelling areas, livestock enclosures and megalithic tombs.
